The List #1: Best Halloween Movies Ever

I love countdowns and lists. It has been my general experience that if you assert what you consider a list of “the best” or “the worst” of something to a group, an impassioned discussion will ensue where different personalities pop out.

Some a-hole will argue with the whole group that Animal House isn’t one of the best comedies of all time just because he likes the sound of his own voice. There’s “that guy” that can’t limit his responses. Like, he can't possibly pick 10 best SNL episodes or he will die. He ends up with the best list b/c he had 25 instead of five. Then there’s the guy saying something really obscure in an attempt to impress the group—like that one of the best quotes of all time comes from a 1930’s French indy drama where the whole thing takes place at one table at one café for 3 ½ hours. (Here’s a tip—don’t ever be “that guy” or no one will want your opinion again. He’s the worst. Actually there's also the guy that only talks in movie quotes. He might be worst. Indy Drama Guy and Movie Quote Guy should fight to the death. That would solve everything.)

But I digress. We at Cheeksdown Productions love (almost) all kinds of movies—comedies are definitely our favorites, but we also love thrillers/horror, and in the spirit of Halloween, I invite everyone to share their top 10.

Here’s my basic criteria: Did it scare the shit out of me?, Was it really clever? (a twist ending is a bonus), Was there a particularly good character or great acting?, Did I have to literally cover my eyes? Was my heart racing? Was the gore and nastiness done right? Here’s mine (in order):

1- Silence of the Lambs
2- Hellraiser
3- The Exorcist
4- Saw
5- Nightmare on Elm Street (although I do like II the best)
6- Halloween
7- Sixth Sense
8- Poltergeist
9- Interview with the Vampire
10- Scream

I want to do an “Honorable Mention” or just a few bonus, but I don’t want to be “that guy” right?

Make my world better! Send your thoughts, your list, a partial list, say why someone else’s list is wrong (but in a nice way, a-holes)! And then check back every Thursday for the next list!

Cheekschick,

I can't help but notice that your top 10 list includes American films only. What about Fellini's Casanova or Argento's Suspiria? Actually, I haven't seen either of those, but I've heard good things from "that guy." Kidding aside, I think you have a pretty good start, but no horror list is complete without at least one Bruce Campbell/Sam Raimi pairing; Evil Dead II is my hands-down favorite, but Army of Darkness is a really close second. Keep the lists coming. What about: Most embarassing movies to watch with your family? Mine was watching Boogie Nights in the theater with my Dad. Talk about awkward!

not a bad list but mine is better.

1. Jaws : As a kid (read last week) I've actually freaked myself out in POOLS before because of this movie. Jaws 2 was best
2. Pet Semetary : bc of the scene where he cuts that old dude's Achilles tendon like warm butter
3. Poltergeist : I think it was 2 where the dude vomits up the 6 foot tequila worm
4. Scream : i could imagine this actually happening
5. Silence of the Lambs : It puts the lotion on or it gets the hose again
6. American Psycho : i know someone exactly like that guy
7. Natural Born Killers : qualify this how you want...i think it is horrifying
8. Blair Witch Project : it looks like they filmed it in my back yard
9. Jaws : did i mention that REALLY freaked me out a lot...it deserves two spots for me
10. The Omen

Although not in your category of thriller/horror, i think the Wizard of Oz is a scary-ass movie because of the flying monkeys! Holy hell, could you imagine the mayhem?

I'm also terrified of big foot and snakes...but very disappointed that all movies about either completely suck.

Those lists aren't right, here's the RIGHT list!!!

1. Jaws: 30 years old and people STILL have the fear of a killer shark attack!!
2. Halloween: Michael Myers in the original was the scariest mo fo EVER!!
3. The Exorcist: C'mon, her HEAD spun!!
4. Psycho: The was creeepy and scary!
5. Cujo: This movie doens't get the credit it deserves!!
6. Carrie: When those doors slammed in the school gym, who DIDN'T jump??
7. Blair Witch Project: For a few weeks, this movie was freaking people out.
8. Silence of the Lambs: Scary and SUPER creepy.
9. The Shining: Jack is the man!!
10. Joy Ride: one of the best creepy movies of the new millenium.

Scream was a SPOOF of scary movies, so shouldn't be allowed on real scary movie lists!!

Dearest Cheekschick-

I think you have a killer (get it? killer? Horror Movies?) start. However, mine differs slightly. And I disagree with da pope...scream was scary as hell...those masks still freak me out and people still use them during robberies and stuff. Freaky! My last comment before I list the list....I have two technically non scary movies on the list. If you remember these movies you realize they are the freakiest and scariest of them all...supposed to be Children's Fantasy movies, but totally scary! Actually I still have nightmares about Dorothy being captured by the Wheelers and locked in the room with the 30 heads! Ack!

My "List"

1. Silence of the Lambs : That voice saying Clarice...and the weirdo lotion guy!
2.Return to Oz : Pumpkin Head guy, Tick Tok, the Wheelers...an acid addicts nightmare
3. Saw : The orginal one the scariest, gory and a sense of realism
4. Blair Witch Project : I couldn't sleep for weeks-nightmares of people standing in corners
5. The Ring : 7 Days....I seriously watched my back for a week and on the 7th day didn't turn on my TV
6. The Excorist : actually this reminds me of myself as the child brat I was
7.The Dark Crystal : freaky freaky freaky PUPPETS! Jim Henson at his FREAKIEST!
8. Poltergiest : Mainly because of the true curse of the poeple who made this movie
9. The Shining : Here's Johnny!
10. The Talented Mr Ripely : Matt Damon with a killer obsession! Really its a Thriller, but I think it was creepy!

Child's Play. Did anyone have a "My Buddy doll" as a child? If not, you will not understand. If so, you can empathize with me, as I would lock my brother's evil buddy down in the basement every night just to ensure I would not be attacked by a stuffed plastic boy with a knife while I was sleeping. . .No, that movie hasn't affected me at all. . .ahhhhh!

"THE ORIGINAL" When a stranger calls. AND When a stranger calls back. Any former babysitters out there? Who didn't crap their pants when they learned "The call is coming from INSIDE the house!"

That's about it for me. No one had mentioned these yet, so I thought i would. Have a Happy Halloween!
